It's different for everyone. Hard hearts. Self centeredness. Many have never really heard the Gospel.

The key is for people to get to a place where they feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit drawing them to a place of repentance. Without that, it's very difficult to have confidence in our salvation. However, when we respond to the prompting of the Spirit, our encounter with God isn't emotional or mental. The change in our lives goes so much deeper.

The main problem is that many have never had that encounter with God. Therefore their eyes are blinded and hearts are hard.
